Frequent internet drop-outs: diagnosis and fixes
In short Tell apart a Wi-Fi drop (one device disconnects) and a line drop (every device loses internet, router lights change). Note the times and the state of the lights: that is the key to a fast diagnosis and an effective repair.

Drop-outs are more frustrating than modest speed: a call cuts off, a game disconnects, a video stops. The first question is simple: what exactly is dropping?

Step 1: identify the type of drop-out

Wi-Fi drop-outs

  • Power-saving modes on phones and laptops that turn Wi-Fi off on standby.
  • Automatic band switching between 2.4 and 5 GHz at the edge of coverage.
  • Interference: microwaves, Bluetooth devices, neighbouring networks on the same channel.
  • Too many devices on an old router.

Fixes: move the device closer, give the bands separate names, update, or install Mesh. See improving your Wi-Fi.

Router drop-outs

  • Overheating: a router shut in a cabinet or in the sun restarts by itself.
  • Power: a faulty power strip or brief power cuts. A small UPS solves it.
  • Firmware: some versions have bugs; a full restart often triggers the update.

Line drop-outs

On fibre

A LOS light (or "Alarm") blinking or red means the optical signal is lost. Causes: bent or unplugged optical cord, dirty connector, damaged cable in the building. Detailed guide: red LOS light on a fibre router.

On ADSL

Frequent re-syncs often come from a faulty filter, an oxidised socket or a damp line. See slow ADSL: improving your speed.

Keep a drop-out log

Before calling your provider, note for a few days:

  1. The date, time and duration of each drop-out.
  2. The state of the router lights during the drop-out.
  3. Whether it affects the cable, Wi-Fi or both.
  4. A speed test before and after.

A precise log often avoids pointless back-and-forth and gets a faster repair. Send it to your provider's support with a few speed test results.

Frequently asked questions

Why does internet cut out every night at the same time?

It may be a scheduled router update, network maintenance or a Wi-Fi schedule enabled in the router interface.

My router restarts by itself, is that serious?

Usually overheating or unstable power. If it continues in a ventilated spot, ask for a replacement router.

Can drop-outs come from the optical cable?

Yes. A bent cord or dirty connector causes intermittent signal loss and the LOS light.
