Testing your Starlink connection
Starlink is a low Earth orbit satellite service available in many countries. Because its satellites fly only a few hundred kilometres up, latency is in the tens of milliseconds, unlike older geostationary satellite internet. Speed is shared between users under each satellite.
This test detects your provider automatically and measures download, upload, ping, jitter and latency under load against the nearest server on Cloudflare's network. Enter your plan speed under the result to see the percentage you really get.
Starlink speeds by plan
| Plan | Download | Upload |
|---|---|---|
| Residential (published range) | about 150 to 350 Mbps | about 20 to 40 Mbps |
Figures from Starlink's residential service summary, which lists latency of about 25 to 60 ms; plans and speeds vary by country and plan, and Starlink states they are not guaranteed. Checked on 31 October 2026; tiers change and vary by address, so confirm on the Starlink website.
What result should you expect?
A good result is in the published range with ping between 25 and 60 ms. Short spikes every few seconds are normal when the dish switches satellites. Frequent long drops usually mean an obstruction.

Common reasons for slow Starlink speeds
- Obstructions: trees and buildings interrupt the link. Use the obstruction map in the Starlink app.
- Weather: heavy rain or snow weakens the signal briefly.
- Busy cells: in popular areas speed is lower in the evening.

Before contacting Starlink support
- Check the obstruction map and move the dish if needed.
- Look at the app's statistics for outages and their causes.
- Test over a cable if your router has an Ethernet adapter.
- If speeds stay below your plan, check for traffic throttling, then contact support with your saved results.

Frequently asked questions
Is Starlink good enough for video calls?
Yes in most cases, thanks to latency in the tens of milliseconds. Brief drops can occur with obstructions or satellite handovers.
Why is my Starlink ping jumping?
The dish regularly switches satellites and obstructions cause short interruptions. Occasional spikes are normal; constant ones point to an obstruction.
Is Starlink faster than 5G home internet?
It depends on where you are. In cities with good 5G, fixed wireless is often faster and cheaper; in rural areas Starlink is often the better option.
