Testing your Spectrum connection

Spectrum, Charter's internet brand, delivers most of its service over cable, with fibre in some areas. Its tiers are simple and its plans come with no data caps, but as with all cable, the upload stays far below the download on most plans.

This test detects your provider automatically and measures download, upload, ping, jitter and latency under load against the nearest server on Cloudflare's network. Enter your plan speed under the result to see the percentage you really get.

Spectrum speeds by plan

PlanDownloadUpload
Internet Advantageup to 100 Mbpsabout 10 Mbps
Internet Premierup to 500 Mbpsabout 20 Mbps
Internet Gigup to 1,000 Mbpsabout 35 Mbps
Internet 2 Gig (select areas)up to 2,000 Mbpsabout 35 Mbps, more in upgraded areas

Spectrum's own conditions state that speeds are based on a wired connection and that a capable modem is required for Gig speeds. Upload figures above are the ones commonly published for each tier; upgraded parts of the network offer higher uploads. Checked on 31 October 2026; tiers change and vary by address, so confirm on the Spectrum website.

What result should you expect?

A Premier plan should test close to 500 Mbps over Ethernet. If you see about 100 Mbps, check that you are not on the Advantage tier or on an old plan. Uploads of 20 to 35 Mbps are normal for Spectrum cable, not a fault.

Common reasons for slow Spectrum speeds

  • Modem not gig-capable: Gig and 2 Gig need a compatible modem; older equipment limits the speed.
  • Router not included: on some plans the Wi-Fi router is an add-on, and people test over an old personal router. Compare with a cable test.
  • Peak-hour congestion in busy areas: see evening slowdowns.
  • Upload-heavy work: if video calls freeze, measure latency under load rather than download speed.

Before contacting Spectrum support

  1. Restart the modem first, then the router, waiting until each is fully online.
  2. Test over Ethernet next to the router, three times, at different hours.
  3. Check for outages in the My Spectrum app.
  4. If speeds stay below your plan, check for traffic throttling, then contact support with your saved results.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spectrum have data caps?

Spectrum advertises unlimited data on its internet plans, so speed should not drop because of how much you use.

Why is my Spectrum speed lower on Wi-Fi?

Spectrum measures its plan speeds on a wired connection. Wi-Fi loses speed with distance, walls and older devices, so test next to the router or over a cable to compare.

What happened to Spectrum Ultra?

Spectrum replaced its older Ultra plan with Internet Premier at up to 500 Mbps. Existing customers may still see the old name on their account.
