Testing your Sky Broadband connection

Sky Broadband runs mainly over the Openreach network, with Full Fibre plans up to Gigafast (about 900 Mbps). On the CityFibre network, Sky also sells Gigafast+ plans with symmetrical 2.5 or 5 Gbps. Most full fibre plans come with the Sky Max Hub (Wi-Fi 6), and Gigafast+ with a Wi-Fi 7 hub.

This test detects your provider automatically and measures download, upload, ping, jitter and latency under load against the nearest server on Cloudflare's network. Enter your plan speed under the result to see the percentage you really get.

What result should you expect?

On Gigafast, a wired test should show 850 to 940 Mbps down and about 90 Mbps up. To see Gigafast+ speeds you need a 2.5G or 10G port on your computer. Over Wi-Fi, results depend on the hub and your device.

Common reasons for slow Sky Broadband speeds

  • Wi-Fi blamed for the line: run our Wi-Fi or line diagnosis.
  • Older hub on a fast plan: part fibre plans may still use an older Wi-Fi 5 hub.
  • Multi-gig on a gigabit port: see is gigabit internet worth it.
  • Peak-time drops: test between 8 and 10 pm and compare with the minimum guaranteed speed in your contract.

Before contacting Sky support

  1. Restart the hub and check its status light.
  2. Use the My Sky app to run a line test.
  3. Keep wired results from different times before calling.
  4. If speeds stay below your plan, check for traffic throttling, then contact support with your saved results.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sky Gigafast symmetrical?

No. Gigafast on Openreach averages about 900 Mbps down and 90 Mbps up. Only the Gigafast+ plans on CityFibre are symmetrical.

What hub do I get with Sky Full Fibre?

Full fibre plans generally include the Sky Max Hub with Wi-Fi 6; Gigafast+ comes with a Wi-Fi 7 hub. Part fibre plans may use an older hub.

Why is Sky slower in the evening?

Peak hours (around 8 to 10 pm) bring the most traffic. Compare with the minimum guaranteed speed Sky gave you when you signed up.
